Pet Aftercare Options: Honoring Your Pet with Dignity and Compassion
At Tri-State Veterinary Services, we understand that saying goodbye to a beloved companion is one of the most emotional experiences a family can face. After your pet’s peaceful in-home euthanasia, you’ll have several options for their aftercare. Our role is to guide you through these choices with compassion, clarity, and respect—helping you select what feels right for your family and your pet.
We offer support for pet cremation, burial, and home aftercare, ensuring every pet is treated with dignity and love.
Cremation Services
Cremation is a gentle and meaningful way to honor your pet’s memory. We work closely with two trusted and reputable facilities to ensure your pet is cared for with professionalism and compassion.
Abbey Glen Pet Memorial Park – Lafayette, NJ
Abbey Glen has been providing pet memorial services for over 50 years. Families may choose between:
- Private Cremation: Your pet is cremated individually, and their ashes are returned to you in a chosen urn or keepsake.
- Communal Cremation: Several pets are cremated together, and ashes are not returned.
Abbey Glen also offers personalized memorial products, including paw prints, engraved urns, and custom keepsakes to help you cherish your pet’s memory.
Forever Angels Pet Cemetery & Crematory – Wallkill, NY
Forever Angels offers private cremation only, ensuring your pet is handled individually and with care. Their compassionate team provides ashes in a chosen container for you to keep or memorialize as you wish.
In addition to cremation, Forever Angels maintains a peaceful pet cemetery where families can choose a burial plot for their pet’s final resting place.
- Cemetery Burials: Pets may be laid to rest in the serene Forever Angels Pet Cemetery, a beautiful, well-maintained space for remembrance.
- Pre-Planning Options: Families may also pre-plan burial plots and services for future peace of mind, allowing thoughtful decisions to be made ahead of time.
Tri-State Veterinary Services can help coordinate transportation and arrangements with Forever Angels to ensure every detail is handled with care.
Choosing Your Own Crematorium or Cemetery
If you already have a preferred pet crematorium or cemetery, we completely respect your decision. You are always welcome to make your own aftercare arrangements directly.
Our veterinarian can assist with preparing your pet’s body for transport and offer guidance on the process to help ensure everything goes smoothly. Whether you’d like to bring your pet to a facility yourself or arrange pickup through your chosen provider, we’ll help make sure your pet is treated gently and respectfully every step of the way.
Home Burial
Some families choose to bury their pet at home, allowing them to remain close to their loved ones. This can be a deeply personal and comforting way to say goodbye.
Please note that home burial laws vary by location. Before proceeding, confirm that this is permitted in your municipality or county, as some areas restrict or prohibit animal burial on private property. Burial should always be performed at a safe depth and distance from water sources to protect wildlife and groundwater.
If you need help finding local burial regulations, our team can point you toward the right resources.
Choosing the Right Option for Your Family
Every family’s needs and beliefs are different. Whether you prefer cremation, cemetery burial, home burial, or your own aftercare provider, Tri-State Veterinary Services is here to help guide you through the process with empathy and understanding.
Our goal is to ensure your pet’s life is honored with the respect and care they deserve—handled gently, thoughtfully, and without stress.

Frequently Asked Questions About Pet Aftercare
1. Can I bring my pet to the crematorium or cemetery myself?
Yes. You’re welcome to take your pet directly to a crematorium or cemetery of your choice. If you plan to do so, please let us know in advance so we can help prepare your pet appropriately for transport. We can also provide guidance on what to expect when you arrive at the facility.
2. How long does it take to receive my pet’s ashes after cremation?
The timeline can vary slightly depending on the crematorium, but most families receive ashes within 7–14 days after the cremation is completed. Your veterinarian can help you understand what to expect based on which facility you choose.
3. What’s the difference between private and communal cremation?
- Private cremation: Your pet is cremated individually, and their ashes are returned to you in a selected urn or keepsake.
- Communal cremation: Several pets are cremated together, and ashes are not returned. Both options are handled with dignity and respect.
4. Can I bury my pet at home?
Home burial can be a comforting option for many families, but it’s important to check local and county regulations first—some municipalities have restrictions on burying animals on private property. We can help direct you to resources to confirm what’s allowed in your area.
5. What if I want to plan ahead for my pet’s aftercare?
Planning ahead can make a difficult time a little easier. Our partner Forever Angels Pet Cemetery offers pre-planning services for cremation and burial plots, allowing you to make arrangements in advance. We can provide information and help coordinate those plans if you’d like.
